Soccer World Cup Highlights

There were tears, there was laughter, there was controversy and there was celebration. No matter which team you were behind or whether you just supported the event in the name of soccer, the World Cup in South Africa 2010 was an historical event never to be forgotten by the global community.

With the welcome new infrastructure and many social upliftment projects as well as a new appreciation for South Africa and its people, we are ready to welcome the world back to our shores after this highly praised international event.
The eyes of the world were focused on our country and we exceeded the expectations of even our harshest critics across the board. Internally, we have felt a renewed and invigorated sense of unity as we all have stood together united behind one cause.
Congratulations to Spain, as well as all other qualifying teams, for their sportsmanship and performance over the tournament. It is a mark on the history of our country that no South African will ever forget.
South Africa - Ke Nako ("It's Time")
Sitting at my desk, overlooking the Cape Town stadium and reflecting on the experience of this Soccer World Cup, I felt compelled to write a few words.
Many South Africans are asking....
"How can we continue the amazing time we have enjoyed?"
"Will we go back to normal after the Soccer World Cup?"
Well, if we really analyse the success of these past weeks in our country, it's because each and every one of us, black, coloured, Indian and white, rich poor, old and young, have stood together as one nation, first in support of Bafana Bafana, then in support of other African teams, followed by support for whichever team we chose to adopt.
But through all of these games, we stood together as proud South Africans, in support of the land we all love so dearly and in different ways.
Our excitement is palpable and our visitors from many countries in the world have seen and felt the true heart beat of South  Africa.
This is the success of the Soccer World Cup.
And it cannot be measured in any amount of Billions of Rands.

Quarter Finals
We are correct to be proud of our stadiums, of our police force, our service staff in and outside of the stadium, of the fan mile (Cape Town centre to Green Point was awesome) and fan parks.
The way we welcomed our visitors knocked them off their feet, our hospitality shone bright.
The world watched on TV and read in the newspapers of the safe, clean, organised, efficient, hospitable, friendly and fun place South Africa is.
The answer to the questions above are simple...
It's up to you and I, each and every one of us to ensure the beauty of what we are living through continues.
Ordinary people, everyday folk like us have the power to ensure we will revert to a "new normal" after the 11th of July.
A smile for a stranger, a kind word to a colleague, help for someone less fortunate than ourselves.
Do this every day and the SWC gees(spirit) will continue.
And yes, when you feel the need for a boost.... blow a vuvuzela.
What a wonderful time to be living in South Africa. Come visit and see for yourself!

Ke nako, these words have new meaning now.

PS. A word of advice, those wishing to travel in peak season (December/January) are advised to book as soon as possible as we are experiencing limited availability due to the overwhelming exposure that South Africa has received.

"A new beginning” - An account by Alistair Leuner, ranger and assistant manager of Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve.

The last 2 years have not been the most productive for one of the female leopards called Young Nottons at Sabi Sabi. 2 years ago she managed to successfully raise a young female cub, Mbilo, to adulthood. Today Mbilo is an integral part of many guest sightings at Sabi Sabi. Since then Young Nottons has not been able to raise another cub to adulthood; plagued by attacks from hyena and a rogue male Leopard, luck has not been on her side.
She was then recorded mating with the dominant male leopard in January and seen growing progressively larger over the months that followed. Two and a half months later, when a ranger was leaving the camp, there to his surprise, right in the road was Young Nottons with one cub. The ranger soon discovered there were in fact two cubs.
The ranger and guests managed to follow the two precious cubs for a short while as they played and jumped all over their mother.
She was leading them to a kill she had made and was taking them for their first taste of meat. The ranger decided to respectfully not follow her as she led the young ones through thick bush. A month later the cubs were spotted again yet still not pursued by the rangers.
Then one morning an impala kill in the tree close to the lodge was called in. At first it appeared as though only the female leopard was at the kill, but when one of the rangers went to the sighting in the evening he got what every Safari guest wishes to see in their lifetime: the mother and her two cubs on the kill. The family entertained guests for three days while they fed and played. The cubs are becoming very inquisitive with the game drive vehicles and are providing guests with memories and pictures that will never be forgotten.
We hope that Young Nottons continues her good work and manages to raise these cubs to adulthood, so that future visitors to Sabi Sabi will have the pleasure of witnessing the prowess of one of the most beautiful and graceful animals on the planet

Grootbos Nature Reserve, Western Cape, South Africa

In June, in preparation for the soccer fever that was about to hit us all, my family and I went to Grootbos Nature Reserve for a quiet and relaxing weekend. Grootbos, just 30 minutes’ drive from Hermanus, is an isolated and serene reserve brimming with fynbos and other verdant fauna, overlooking Walker Bay.
We stayed at Forest Lodge, a spacious and warm lodge that offered us all the creature comforts including a private deck for each freestanding suite with outdoor showers overlooking the expansive reserve and Walker Bay.
The lodge’s cuisine is Michelin-star quality, with each meal of favorite dishes prepared with Grootbos flair. The staff was friendly and warm and our Nature Guide, Billy, is one of the best I have encountered; educating us on the endless splendour of the surrounding ecosystems in this unique biome.
We were also shown the lodge’s Green Futures facility; a horticulture and life skills program which empowers disadvantaged members of the community to find sustainable work whilst conserving the environment.

August

Dry season in Tanzania and other regions of East Africa draws wildlife from their protected dwellings in search of water. In the Central Kalahari region of Botswana, the dry season clears the plains and allows cheetah sightings. This creates exhilarating game viewing opportunities as prey are exposed to predators in the open wild.
Spring in South Africa sees the blooming of floral kingdoms throughout the country. One such expansive area is the Namaqualand, situated approximately 3 hours north of Cape Town, where rolling hills of previously arid land are transformed into multi-colored palettes of floral beauty.

September

The Southern Right Whales have reached Hermanus and Walker Bay to perform their annual breeding rituals. These majestic mammals can be viewed from the shore along various stops on the breathtaking cliff path and pristine beaches as well as from boat tours throughout July until December.

October

In the warm waters of the Indian Ocean Islands, green turtles hatch in October in places such as Mnemba Island, Zanzibar as well as North Island, Seychelles. They make their way carefully through the treacherous path from where they have hatched on the beach to the water, avoiding predators along the way.
